I Dream takes place within the consciousness of Rev. Ralph Abernathy, known for leading the Civil Rights movement alongside his closest friend, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but later accused of tarnishing his friend’s memory with a controversial memoir. As Ralph approaches the end of his own life, his mind and body failing, he returns to pivotal memories and his final moments with Martin, accompanied by Bria, a young activist whose [unabashed] questioning and criticism lay bare Ralph’s own harshest critiques and judgments of himself. Together they explore the internal conflicts within the Civil Rights movement—which demanded heroes armed with both the moral high ground and magnetic charisma—and its leaders, passionate but flawed men and women.

Bria’s modern-day examination of Ralph, Martin, and Coretta, the decisions they made, and the legacies they left, invites audiences to look inward to their own convictions about justice, identity and accountability. With them, we enter into an argument which rages still today about what means are truly necessary and justifiable to bring about change from radical love to streets bathed in blood.
